The Love, Yumi Translation Project: #3 “Anything For You” by Ayumi Hamasaki

In honor of the release of โ€œLove, Yumiโ€ I have taken both classic and modern J-pop songs that relate to the themes and feelings of the novel.ย

โ€œAnything For Youโ€ is probably one of the best example of a contemporary J-pop song enshrouding the entire meaning of the book. In fact, when this song was released during the course of writing the novel, I knew it couldn’t have come at a better time. The lyrics are about someone wanting to give up everything they have, possess, and want for the person they love. As the title implies, the subject will give “anything for you.”

Listen to the song here!

Images of that far away day still remain

Since then, how far have we walked?

Right now someone is standing in the same place

Having the same confusion

You were hurt, right? You also couldn’t hide your heart

Only time can always soften the pain

Hey, if I have something, I’ll give it all to you

My strength, my kindness, love… all of these feelings

Hey, that’s why you’re okay there. Just extend that hand a little.

It’s all right, I’ll catch that hand without fail

It’s not that I no longer have any anxiety

But I’ve learned the strength of sharing and supporting one another

I believe in the words “I want to believe,”

I can’t forget your vexed profile that said, “I’m sorry.”

You’re too honest, right? Your skill isn’t in conducting yourself

Sometimes we happen to clash together like that. You’re fine the way you are.

For all eternity, don’t lose that innocent smile

I’ll become anythingย if it would prevent that

On rainy days I’ll become your umbrella so you don’t freeze

On clear days I’ll become your wind so you can smell the flowers

I’ll look over everything ahead so there’s nothing to fear

If you’re found in darkness, I’ll shine a dazzling light

Hey, if I have something, I’ll give it all to you

My strength, my kindness, love… all of these feelings

Hey, that’s why you’re okay there. Just extend that hand a little.

It’s all right, I’ll catch that hand without fail
